Introduction to Chinese Herbal Therapy in TCVM
TCVM as a whole incorporates many different treatment modalities, of which acupuncture is only one. Veterinary patients can be treated with Chinese herbal formulas in addition to acupuncture treatments to increase the benefit of treatment. The first step to implementing useful Chinese herbal therapy is to assess and diagnose the patient. Once the practitioner identifies the patient's pattern of imbalance, a formula or combination of formulas may be selected to address that pattern. Chinese herbal formulas for animals typically come in granular, tablet, and/or liquid forms. They can be used safely with many conventional medications, and do not often produce side effects. It is important that the TCVM practitioner be aware of all other medications & supplements the animal receives, to accurately select an herbal formula or to advise the owner about potential interactions.
